Course description

The course covers the safe administration of medicines within Social Care Settings.

The first part of the course will cover the knowledge required to administer medicines and refers to medicines legislation, professional standards and guidance.

The second part of the day covers the basic practical skills required in order to be assessed as competent to administer medicines under the good practice guidance

To equip care workers in the safe administration of medicines.

Learning outcomes

Describe how to store, handle and dispose of medication safely.

Identify legislation and guidance regarding medication and consider the impact this has on your work policies and practice.

Discuss case studies regarding issues that may occur when handling medication.

Practical demonstrations for the basics of safe handling of medication, including:

The basics:

  • Medicines applied to the skin

  • Into the mouth (tablets, capsules, liquids)

  • Ear, nose and eye drops

  • Inhalers
