Course description

This live interactive virtual classroom, delivered through Microsoft Teams, aims to increase participant’s understanding, skills and knowledge when working with parents whose Learning Needs can impact on their parenting abilities.


This course will benefit staff from Children's Services (Social Care and Education), Health, Community Mental Health Teams & the Community and Voluntary sector who are working with children & families or with adults who have children & may be involved in making and/or receiving referrals regarding child care and child protection issues.


Important note: It is essential that you have undertaken the Safeguarding Children and Young People eLearning prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or an equivalent CP/Safeguarding Awareness courses within your own organisation or you may be turned away.

Training objectives

  • This training course offers an opportunity for agencies to gain knowledge and confidence in effective ways of working with families when a parent has a learning disability.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will have: 



  • Gained an understanding of the term “learning disability” and though about the risk and protective factors when there are parenting issues.

  • Had the opportunity to explore the impact that having a learning disability has on the adult(s) and children 

  • Reflected on good practice between agencies and explored what works for parents and their children.

  • Understood some of the challenges for supporting families and how to overcome them.

A maximum of three representatives from each team may have a confirmed place and further bookings will be put on a wait list.
 
Preparation and Follow Up 
Before attending any ESSCP training course, participants must attend a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children and Young People online eLearning training course.

To access and complete the eLearning courses, you must go to the eLearning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal and enter the Children's Workforce channel. The tutor will hold the right to turn away delegates who have not completed the required training
