Course description

Writing for the Web training – standards and conventions for writing online.

Please note - this is a remote learning session which will be delivered using Microsoft Teams.

We recommend that you check

  • firstly that you have Microsoft Teams available on the device you intend to use

  • that both the video and audio settings are available on that device

  • that you complete the session in a place with as little likelihood of interruption as possible, and with minimal background noise

  • and that you are aware of the joining instructions in Additional Information (below)  

Training objectives

Staff with responsibility for content on the ESCC Website (internet) and intranet – you will become a web author for your department.

You will also have to do the Website & Intranet CMS Training

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

  • understand the differences in writing for print and screen

  • consider the needs of busy online readers and what they need to know

  • learn how to write effective headlines and summary links

  • be able to break down content visually on a screen

  • be able to improve readability through design, layout and typography

  • write clearly and avoid bureaucratic jargon

  • know how to use hyper linking to avoid lengthy pages

  • encourage reader feedback and interaction

  • be able to repurpose content from other sources and avoiding downloadable documents

  • consider aspects of accessibility

  • understand the importance of protecting the corporate brand; discuss tone of voice and verbal branding issues

  • be able to maintain web communication standards and quality control
