Course description

This course will be delivered via In-Person Classroom training. You will be expected to attend a specific venue on the date(s) of the training. Please see the course full details and attached map for further information.

Important Note: This course is for senior staff or Healthcare professionals who have undertaken the full First Aid at Work (3 day) or the minimum of the Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day), and Train the Trainer in Moving and Handling of People, also having completed the online theory for Assisting the Fallen Person.

This is a 2 day course covering assessment of the fallen person using a series of checks to assess for injury. The questions can also be used for information gathering prior to an ambulance arrival for the injured person.  This is in line with the ESCC Guidance on assisting the fallen person.

For the uninjured person the course covers how to assist with self-help from the floor and the use of a lifting cushion, also hoisting from the floor in various situations.

This will give additional information for senior staff to enable to check staff are confident in the use of the decision making check sheet and to practically use the Elk or other methods to prevent clients remaining on the floor when uninjured or have a minor injury.

This venue has a current Covid19 risk assessment. Any delegates showing Covid19 symptoms must not attend the training venue.



Training objectives

This course has a large practical element:

Day 1 of the course covers:

* Fallen person checks/use of decision making tool/check sheet
* Additional information relating to fractures which may not have been covered in first aid training
* Pain assessment
* Body checks
* History taking
* Practicals in scenario style for body checking
* Decision making for self-help or equipment use
* Practical use of Mangar Elk and different ways the elk can be used and a person assisted onto the cushion
* Hoisting from the floor and use of other equipment to move a person into a position whereby they can be assisted from the floor.

Day 2 of the course is delegate delivery of scenarios relevant to their service.

This course is mainly practical so participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate. Footwear should be flat/ low heel and closed in toes. No flipflops. Failure to participate or inappropriate dress or footwear will be reported to managers and the delegate may be refused entry to the training room.


Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, it is anticipated candidates will:

Have additional information to enhance their first aid knowledge relating to fractures
Have additional knowledge relating to pain
Understand the need for professional assistance for specific medication or conditions
Understand how to carry out a body check
Understand how to use the Mangar Elk and methods of assisting a person onto the Mangar Elk
Understand hoisting from the floor
Understand the use of other equipment to move a person into a suitable position to use the lifting equipment.

Additional Information

The Certificate is Valid for 2 years as long as Moving and Handling train the trainer and First Aid certificates are in date as well as having undertaken the online theory for Assisting the Fallen Person.
