Course description
This course is suitable for all ESCC DPS support workers who support people who have epilepsy.

Please note:

This session includes an assessment of competence in a training environment (measuring a 1ml dose and administering to the buccal cavity on a colleague).

Following this training and BEFORE administering Buccal Midazolam:

It is the manager’s responsibility to ensure that the staff member understands each individual client’s care plan /support profile regarding the administration and use of Buccal Midazolam. The manager needs to sign the attendance certificate to show this part of the competency assessment has been carried out.


Training objectives

 To have a basic awareness of epilepsy and how to administer Buccal Midazolam.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course it is anticipated you will be able to:


  • Identify different causes of epilepsy


  • Discuss different seizures groups and types


  • State safe practice measures when responding to/supporting an individual having a seizure


  • Describe the required information for recording a seizure


  • Know how to administer Buccal Midazolam (DVD & trainer demonstration).
