Course description

This is a course for moving and handling trainers who directly train staff in safe moving and handling of people techniques and how to complete moving and handling of people risk assessments.


The course is an in-depth 4 day course, spread over 2-5 weeks.  Please note: not all days will necessarily be the same day of the week.


This course is specifically for the moving and handling training of people, NOT LOADS. 


For the practical element participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate.  Footwear should be flat/low heel and closed in toes.  No flip-flops or open toe sandals.

Training objectives

This 4 day course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to train others in the moving and handling of people and in the conducting of individual, balanced moving and handling risk assessments.


The course covers:



  • Key legislation affecting the moving and handling of people

  • Anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of spinal injury (including biomechanics principles)

  • The importance of individual client centred risk assessments (how to complete them and moving and handling plans)

  • A range of safe moving and handling manoeuvers and techniques

  • Ability testing; moving and handling equipment including assisted standing equipment, hoists and slide sheets.


The course also covers learning styles and principles to become an effective teacher and assess staff competencies in the work place.


The course requires candidates to complete a risk assessment, deliver a teaching presentation and pass a written test.

Learning outcomes

By the end of these sessions, it is anticipated candidates will:



  • Have a working knowledge of legislation relating to moving and handling, and how it influences and affects moving and handling for the employer, employee and client

  • Be confident in using and training staff in a wide range of pieces of manual handling equipment and to be able to explain how it may be used in the safer moving and handling of people

  • Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of up-to-date practical skills in the moving and handling of adults in a care setting

  • Be able to undertake a moving and handling risk assessment

  • Be able to risk assess unsafe practices of controversial techniques and understand and be able to teach the injury risks of each

  • Demonstrate the skills and confidence to convey moving and handling knowledge and skills to others.
