Course description

As a result of the LGSCO decision, and the SAR of Adult B, Adult C and Child T, this workshop is offered as an opportunity for staff to refresh and update their knowledge of domestic abuse. We will explore what we understand about domestic abuse including coercion and control, practice challenges when working with adults with care and support needs, professional curiosity in assessing risk, safety planning and how to complete the Domestic Abuse, Stalking and 'Honour'-based violence (DASH) risk assessment tool.


Staff will need to have completed the three Domestic Abuse eLearning modules on the East Sussex Learning Portal before taking part in this session:



  1. Domestic Abuse – Foundation Module 1: What is domestic abuse?

  2. Domestic Abuse – Foundation Module 2: Impact and building resilience, and barriers to seeking support

  3. Domestic Abuse – Foundation Module 3: Risk identification, assessment and management

Training objectives

To raise awareness and increase understanding in addressing domestic abuse including coercion and control, to recognise signs and symptoms, and develop confidence in assessing risk and safety planning.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, it is anticipated you will have had the opportunity to:



  • Increase your awareness of domestic abuse in line with LGSCO/SAR recommendations

  • Consider issues around coercion and control and prevalence of abuse amongst older people, people who have a disability, mental health and substance misuse needs

  • Consider the challenges of inter-familial abuse and explore options for support

  • Understand the DASH risk indicator checklist as a tool for staff alongside the need for professional curiosity and recognising the issues of capacity, control and consent.


 

Additional Information

Staff will need to have completed the Domestic Abuse eLearning course (3 modules) before taking part in this session.
