Course description

The course will include the following key topics:

• Introduction to the course - key issues for participants
• Introductory exercise
• Theory and DH Guidance
• Case vignettes- applying research on risk. Questions to ask. Risk assessment process (harms & benefits)
• MHA Code guidance on health, safety and protection of others
• MHA Risk criteria exercise
• Introduction to checklist
• Questions so far
• Decision-making case study
• Recording and justifying decisions
• Admission and conveying- delays, disagreements and practice issues
• Emotional well-being of AMHPs, supervision and support
• Final exercise. Questions, evaluation and close.


Training objectives

By examining one theoretical approach, AMHPs will consider the benefits from risk taking as well as possible harms, enabling them to evidence a balanced view in their decision- making.

There will be opportunities throughout the training for participants to apply their knowledge and skills to practice dilemmas.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course it is anticipated participants will be:

• Able to show a balanced view in risk assessment and decision-making incorporating a strength-based approach

• Familiar with research and reports relevant to mental health risk assessment and risk management

• Refreshed on how to apply MHA risk criteria and MHA Code to risk decisions

• Confident in their understanding of risk assessment and risk management as a two stage process

• Clear on how to evidence and record their decisions

• Encouraged to review the importance of critical evaluation, supervision & support to their AMHP work.
