Code: ASC/20/708 Basic First Aid (specific with no practical element) – certificate valid for one year - Covid19 Interim Training Programme

IMPORTANT: THIS TRAINING IS PART OF THE FAST-TRACK DISTANCE LEARNING DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS AND IS SUITABLE FOR NEW AND EXISTNG STAFF.

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT NEW STAFF ATTEND FACE TO FACE TRAINING WHEN AVAILABLE.

  • You will be sent a First Aid manual and workbook via email, so it’s vital that you give us your correct email address if it differs from the one on your East Sussex Learning Portal user account
  •  Workbooks are not to be shared between colleagues; each person who wishes to complete this training MUST book their own place on it. Workbooks returned to the trainer by delegates who have not booked a place will NOT be marked
  • After reading the First Aid manual, please complete the workbook and return it (via an email with answers typed or completed in PDF, saved and returned) for marking to ann.holland@eastsussex.gov.uk by no later than the Thursday after you receive the manual.
  • Please don’t hesitate to email Ann with any questions about Basic First Aid.
  • Ann will mark and return your workbook.
  • Your East Sussex Learning Portal user account will be updated to show completion of this training once your workbook has been marked.
  • Please look out for an email to complete session evaluation. We would appreciate your time in completing this so we can evaluate this temporary process. You will then be able to access your certificate online.


This is a distance learning course which does not involve attendance at a training venue or a virtual meeting. You will be sent a First Aid manual and workbook via email closer to the date of the course. Delegates should therefore ignore any map or venue information.

Code: ASC/20/691 Falls Prevention - Online learning (c) (EVENT FULL)

An online learning course for staff working with people who are at risk of falls. The course utilises a recorded (voice over) PowerPoint presentation which can be viewed multiple times. There are also various activities and a case study to engage the learner. The course requires the completion and return of a workbook which serves to foster a deeper level of learning.


Access Requirements

• Internet
• Closed captions have also been added to the presentation for delegates who are Hard of Hearing if this is their preferred method of access.

Earphones or other assistive technology can also be used.


The video (YouTube) can be viewed on all digital platforms and can be viewed independently or as a small group (dependant on organisational social distancing policy).


The workbook comes in a Word document format so access to Microsoft Word is required.


The trainer (Jo Virgo) will email the links to the presentation recording and associated resources on the morning of the course. Therefore, it is essential that you have access to the email address listed on your East Sussex Learning Portal user account on the day of the course.

Code: ASC/20/748 Moving and Handling of People and Objects for Care Support Workers, Volunteers and PAs - Foundation Level Part 2 (practical face to face session) - Covid19 Interim Training Programme

This is Part 2 of a two-part blended learning training programme to be used to reduce face to face training time in accordance with COVID19 regulations.

Part 1 of the training (a virtual session via Skype or Teams) must be completed prior to attending Part 2, which is a face to face practical.

The Part 2 practical can also be applied for if candidates have attended a live SKYPE version of this course tilted “Moving and Handling of People and Objects for Care Support Workers/Volunteers and PAs - Foundation Level - Covid19 Interim Training Programme”

To adhere to Covid19 regulations this face to face course will be small groups with PPE masks, aprons and gloves provided.

The course is 2.5 hours long and will cover practical elements of:

  • Mobility testing
  • Sit to stand techniques
  • Assisting from chair to chair
  • Assisting in and out of bed, including the use of bed levers, bed pulls, non-slip slide sheets, leg lifters, utilising the profiling mattress
  • Walking aids
  • Assisting to walk techniques
  • Handling belts
  • Assisting clients on steps and stairs
  • Sliding boards
  • Turning aids
  • Dressing aids
  • Wheelchairs, including placing a wheelchair into a car

 

For the practical element participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate. Footwear should be flat/ low heel and closed in toes. No flipflops. Candidates will need to wear PPE.

NB. please note there is no access to any drinks or refreshments, so candidates will need to bring their own with them.

The course does not cover clients with restricted mobility, i.e who need hoisting or spend longer periods in bed. This is covered in an additional 2-part blended learning session. The 2-part foundation course must be completed before the restricted mobility course is undertaken.

During Covid19 restrictions these 2 courses replace the:

  • Moving and handling of objects ½ day
  • Moving and handling of people foundation level full day
  • Moving and handling advanced level, hoisting ½ day

IMPORTANT: THIS TRAINING IS PART OF THE COVID-19 INTERIM TRAINING PROGRAMME AND IS SUITABLE FOR NEW AND EXISTNG STAFF. TRAINING WILL BE DELIVERED VIA A SKYPE MEETING AND YOU WILL BE SENT AN INVITE TO IT A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE IT IS DUE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT NEW STAFF ATTEND FACE TO FACE TRAINING WHEN IT IS
AVAILABLE. Please look out for an email to complete session evaluation. We would appreciate your time in completing this so we can evaluate this temporary process. You will then be able to access your certificate.


This course provides delegates with knowledge of safe moving and handling techniques and a basic knowledge of equipment they may need to use to safely move and handle a client. This course does not cover clients with restricted mobility issues, i.e. those who need hoisting or are cared for in bed. During the COVID 19 restrictions, This is covered in an additional 2 hour skype training session called Moving and Handling of People with Restricted Mobility for Care Support Workers/PAs. 

Due to the practical nature of moving and handling of people, it is recommended when accessible, candidates complete the face to face training available through East Sussex. 

The course covers:

  •  A basic knowledge of key legislation affecting the moving and handling and care of objects and people 
  •  Anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of spinal injury by mplementing safe handling principles
  •  The importance of good sitting posture
  •  Knowledge of a range of safe moving and handling assisted mobility techniques, i.e. assisted standing techniques
  •  Techniques to assist someone getting in and out of a bed.

This is a remotely delivered course and delegates should therefore ignore any map or venue information.

On the date of your Safe Handling of Medication training, you will receive an email from tania.hudson@eastsussex.gov.uk with a link to a recorded presentation and a workbook. 

The link is on the ESCC YouTube channel and is by invitation only, so please don’t forward to colleagues. 

  • After viewing the 30 minute presentation, please complete the workbook and return for marking to tania.hudson@eastsussex.gov.uk IF POSSIBLE ON THE SAME DAY
  • The workbook has additional information and helpful links which may be useful to refer back to
