This course covers the knowledge base information of the Care Certificate. It is also a required course if you are applying to be an accredited Personal Assistant (PA) by Support with Confidence (SWC) if you do not have a suitable qualification.

It is also open to people who are either employed as a PA or are thinking of taking on this role in the near future. If you wish to achieve the Care Certificate you will also need to undertake homework and be able to be assessed in your workplace by either volunteering to shadow one of our services or have agreement to be assessed in your workplace (as a PA).

1 day moving and handling and risk assessment train the trainer update course.


The course is recommended approximately 2 years after candidates complete the 4 day moving and handling train the trainer course.

The course aims to update candidates in any changes to legislation affecting the manual handling of people, anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of spinal injury including Biomechanics principles. 

It also covers the importance of individual client centred risk assessments, how to complete them and moving and handling plans. 

The practical element will review a range of safe manual handling manoeuvers, techniques and equipment including assisted standing equipment, hoists and slide sheets.


Prior to the course, candidates will be given a practical short scenario to prepare and present to their fellow candidates.


For the practical element participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate. Footwear should be flat/ low heel and closed in toes. No flipflops or open toe sandals.

This one day course is aimed at Occupational Therapists to develop their role in assessing moving and handling requirements within their role
in the community. The course is aimed at Occupational Therapists with less experience in this area.

This course covers:

  • A basic knowledge of key legislation affecting the moving and handling of people, anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of spinal injury by implementing safe lifting principles
  • Basic knowledge of sitting posture
  • Understanding the requirements and importance of risk assessments and moving and handling plans; risk assessing issues in relation to at risk equipment e.g. bed side rails
  • Knowledge of a range of safe moving and handling assisted mobility techniques, i.e. assisted standing, walking, getting in and out of a bed
  • Basic ability testing
  • A familiarisation of moving and handling equipment including walking aids, assisted standing equipment, slings, hoists and slide sheets and their safe use
  • Completing a basic moving and handling risk assessment and learning skills to complete a balanced risk assessment.

This course is aimed at all levels of care and support workers who may find a person who has fallen.

The course is ½ day covering assessment of the fallen person using a series of checks to assess for injury. The questions can also be used for information gathering prior to an ambulance arrival for the injured person. This is in line with the I-stumble protocols and app.

For the uninjured person, the course covers how to assist with self-help from the floor and the use of a lifting cushion, lifting chair or a hoist.

This course has a large practical element.

The course covers:

  • Fallen person checks
  • Additional information relating to fractures which may not have been covered in basic first aid training
  • Pain assessment
  • Body checks
  • History taking
  • Practicals in scenario style for body checking
  • Decision making for self-help or equipment use
  • Practical use of Mangar Elk and hoisting from floor.

This half day course is aimed at Care Support workers, PAs and prescribers who wish to increase their knowledge and skills in practical means of safely moving and handling clients with one carer.

The course discusses:

  • The reasons and benefits to support single handed care
  • Concerns and misconceptions people hold regarding single handed care and how we can support staff to engage.

Participants will practice with equipment and techniques that can be completed safely with one carer, which promotes dignity and choice.
