This focussed programme aims to develop manager’s knowledge, skills and confidence to enable them to fully integrate a coaching approach into the daily management of staff and projects in order to operate effectively, promote a culture of empowerment and engagement and to support creativity in a challenging business environment.
A coaching approach is increasingly well evidenced across the business community and public sector as an appropriate and successful leadership style, creating a ‘win-win’ effect, where staff are motivated and engaged, and work can be successfully devolved, freeing up valuable management time and resources.

This live interactive virtual classroom is delivered through Microsoft Teams.

This popular course is essential for practitioners from Children's Services and Adult Social Care, education, early help, the police and health, to review, update and consolidate core knowledge about domestic abuse.

This two day ‘professional level’ workshop is part of the domestic abuse thematic learning pathway and will give an overarching and updated view on current research, theory and practice in the field. It is relevant for all East Sussex Children's Services practitioners working with children, young people and families assessed as level 3 or 4 on the Continuum of Need.

Code: ESC/22/4 Appraisal and Supervision (EVENT FULL)

This workshop looks at the skills needed by managers to get the most from these discussions, including how to tackle poor performance and how to further motivate high performers.

It will consist of 2 x half day, interactive, virtual classroom sessions, spaced 1 week apart. The course will use a case study to explore specific issues, particularly around dealing with staff who are struggling to perform well.

Each session will have trainer input, group work discussion and practice.

After day one, delegates will plan actions that they will undertake between day one and day two.

It is essential that you complete the "Maximising Performance" elearning module & pre-course work prior to attending this workshop.

Any specific questions regarding supervision and appraisal can be sent to the trainer up to five days before the course, to help contextualise the sessions. There will be a case study, the first part of which will need to be read before day one.

Code: ASC/22/142 Assisting the Fallen Person (Part 1) – Covid19 Interim Training Programme (c)

This is a Distance Learning Course via presentation on YouTube and a Microsoft Form Quiz and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. The quiz must be completed within a week of the course date and the pass mark is 38/46. If the mark is lower, a scenario for you to complete will be sent after the trainer has reflected on your score.

For those without access to Microsoft forms a hard copy can be sent by special request. Please add this to the special requirements box on the portal when signing onto the course.

The course is the theory (Part 1), covering Assessment of the Fallen Person using a decision-making tool/check sheet to assess for injury and is there a need to call for an ambulance. The check sheet can also be used for information gathering prior to an ambulance arrival for the injured person.
For the uninjured or minor injury the course covers how to assist with self-help from the floor or when to call for and the use of a Elk lifting cushion, Felgains Lifting Chair or a Hoist.

This course has a no practical element.

The world is in a time of massive upheaval; with so much outside of our control, stress appears to have grown exponentially. Constant adaptation and uncertainty is challenging our sense of self and ability to cope.

This concise one day course will provide time to reflect on the impact of recent events and gain insight into how to respond, recover and thrive beyond crises.

The trainer is an experienced psychotherapist, de-briefer and coach.

This is a blended learning approach and requires you to complete some pre-course work. A link to the online learning will be sent to you by the trainer nearer the time. The work must be completed in order to become a qualified and accredited Mental Health First Aider.

The guidance from MHFA England suggests the following pre course durations

Individual Learning Session 1 : 1 hr
Individual Learning Session 2 : 2 hr
Individual Learning Session 3 : 2 hr
Individual Learning Session 4 : 2 hr

This course is for ESCC employees to train as Mental Health First Aiders to support their colleagues in the workplace. Please ensure you read the attached ‘MHFA supporting guidance and commitments’ document and the information below carefully as this contains full information about the course and the MHFA scheme.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised two day accredited training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. There are four sessions to this course, 2 on each of 2 days, and allowing ample time for coffee/comfort breaks.

MHFA training won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. The MHFA course is delivered by a quality assured Instructor accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health, who are trained to keep people safe and supported while they learn.

You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health, and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone whilst keeping yourself safe.

What managers are agreeing to when approving their staff member’s attendance on this course:

  • To releasing your staff member for the two day training course, plus any post support sessions (approx. 2 sessions lasting a maximum of 3 hours each).
  • To releasing your staff member for related meetings and/or training (approximately 2 per year).
  • Allowing time to support colleagues when needed (often at short notice).

What you are committing to:

  • Undertaking the accredited training and any additional training (where required) to acquire and maintain your MHFA certificate.
  • Becoming part of the pool of accredited MHFAers and providing mental health first aid within your workplace as needed, at your level of competence and training.
  • Being able to be called away from your normal duties at short notice if required.
  • Acting as a Mental Health Champion and partaking in ad-hoc wellbeing events (when required and dependent on needs of the service).
  • Partaking in post training support as required/directed.

Code: ASC/22/108 Moving and Handling for People with Dementia - Covid19 Interim Training Programme

This course is aimed at those who care and provide moving and handling assistance for people with dementia. The course looks at the challenges and issues that can arise when helping someone with dementia to move and transfer.

The course covers:

* Symptoms of dementia that affect mobility and movement
* The differences between violence, aggression, anxiety and fear and factors influencing the above
* Behaviour in dementia, focusing on non verbal, verbal and physical. Possible reasons and triggers for such behaviour
* Triggers that can be linked to behaviour specific to moving and handling techniques and strategies and interventions that can be utilised to reduce distress,     including equipment and handling techniques

* Risk assessing for those with dementia and fluctuating ability.

Part of the course is practical so participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate. Footwear should be flat/ low heel and closed in toes. No flipflops.

This is a 2 hour face to face theory and practical session.

2 courses are currently available within adult social care at East Sussex, this 2 hour face to face training or alternatively there is a 1 hour session for those who prefer not to complete face to face training of practical techniques. Delegates therefore do not need to complete both sessions and should choose one option.

To adhere to Covid19 Regulations this face to face course will be small groups with PPE masks, aprons and gloves provided.

The course covers legislation and anatomy.
